Doctor Fish Spa
Originating from the Turkish Springs of
Kangal, the 'Garra Rufa' is a fresh water, hot spring fish. Members of the
carp family they are harmless and toothless bottom feeders generally
living off various planktons and algae, however, living in waters of up to
43 degrees centigrade food sources can at times become scarce and as a
result these unique little fish have over centuries adapted to happily
feeding on the unwanted dead skin cells of bathers swimming in the hot
springs.
Also known as 'nibble fish' and 'little dermatologists' the Garra Rufa
have been used for centuries for medicinal purposes all over the Far East,
but it wasn't until the 1960's when two German brothers happened to
stumble upon one of these hot springs that the unique healing powers of
these fish were brought to worldwide attention. They enjoyed the tickling
sensation of the fish so much that they returned to the pool day after
day, and one of the brothers who had suffered from skin complaints began
to notice a dramatic improvement of his symptoms.
Garra Rufa fish have been proven to aid in the healing process of many
infamous dermatological conditions such as Eczema and Psoriasis.
What's It All About?
The doctor fish
experience is a natural ‘sub-aqua’ pedicure originating in Turkey and
practiced all over the Far East. The Garra Rufa fish remove your dead skin
from your feet by gently sucking and nibbling at the dead skin cells of
your feet or hands. They also stimulate reflexology points on your feet,
this can help to relax and improve blood flow and circulation.
Our doctor fish are very effective at helping to improve the condition of
your skin. Whilst removing the unwanted dead skin from your hands and feet
the fish secrete a substance called Diathanol which is an enzyme well
known to improve the regeneration of skin cells.
Is It Hygienic?
Definitely, the
Garra Rufa fish do not transfer diseases to humans. Prior to treatment
your feet will be pre-rinsed and each person is given their own individual
fish pod. Sterilized water constantly flows through each pod to ensure
that the process is as hygienic as possible. At Gem's Nails & Beauty we

Does It Hurt?
Not at all, (they have
no teeth!) the doctor fish gently remove the dead skin cells by nibbling
and exfoliating with their oval shaped mouths and causing no damage to
healthy skin cells thus allowing new skin cells to develop and existing
skin to heal quicker. The initial sensation can be described as an intense
tingling sensation, this feeling will subside and can become quite
relaxing as the Garra Rufa begin to work their magic on your feet and
hands!
